Known as the Mountain of God- South of Lake Natron -Located in the Ngorongoro conservation area
Known as Mountain of God in the Maasai language. It is situated to the South of Lake Natron and is adventurous and challenging to summit the 2878 meters, of this active volcanic mountain with striking views all through.
Ol Doinyo Lengai contains basalts rich in sodium and potassium, and is so alkaline that its lavas resemble washing soda. Subsidiary cones extend out from the centre and down its sides. The volcano has more than one active center and most of the recent eruptions were from its northern crater.
An overnight ascent to the summit, under moonlight is an unforgettable and magical experience. However the same can also be achieved during early morning hours and returning the same day to the Base. The best time to summit this ‘Mountain of God’ is during the dry season between July and December, however the other months also are accessible, just that the roads to the base are more challenging.
The Zones:
Being an active volcanic mountain, the lava from this mountain produces soda (Sodium Carbonate), which is also much more liquidy than common lava and often less viscous. However, once it has erupted, it quickly turns from black to grey in colour, resulting in a volcanic landscape, which is washed down by rain and ground water and thus giving no specific zones to the mountain.
The Routes:
It takes just a single day to trek up and down the mountain. The trek is worth once you see the un-paralleled views from the peak at sunrise. On a clear day one can expect to see the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro protruding through the skyline beside the sunrise on the Eastern horizon.
To the north you may see the far end of Flamingo infested Lake Natron, to the west you will be able to glimpse over the escarpment across the Sale Plains all the way to the Gol Mountains, a view that is so phenomenal that it remains in one’s memory forever.
A peek into the trek,
Wake up at around midnight for tea/coffee and snacks before starting the trek. Transfer to the base and start the ascent by 1am. Summit Oldonyo Lengai just around Golden light awaiting sunrise. After breath taking scenery and photo session start the descent to get to the base by Midday.
